Disputes: What To Do When Your Medical Bills Are Turned Down

It can be very frustrating when you were careful to make sure that you had a good health insurance policy, and then to find that they may not pay. While this does happen rather often, there are ways to go about, in a calm manner, disputing the denial with your insurance company. Here are some things that are available to you to help get that bill paid.

Reread The Terms Of Payment

When you get ready to contact the health insurance company about the dispute, you will want to be sure that you know what you are talking about. Carefully read and highlight in your insurance handbook everything that might apply. Look over those clauses to make sure that you understand what they are saying.

Have The Papers In Front of You

When you are ready for the call, be sure to have in front of you all correspondence from the insurance company that relates to the issue. If there are several letters, put them in order by date. Carefully reread the reason given for the rejection of payment - by law the reason for rejection must be written and given to you. You may find that there was not enough information given by the doctor's office. If so, you will need to talk to the doctor's office before proceeding.

Document Conversations

When you call your health insurance company, you need to get all the necessary information and write it down. Record who it was that you talked to, the date and time, and the results of the conversation. Write down any decisions that were made or further action that was recommended. Above all, keep your head, and be as pleasant as possible to the customer service representative. It was not their mistake, but their job is to try and help you. Try to get a date from them as to when you should have an answer. Then, if you do not get an answer, you will want to call them again.

Reject The First "No" Answer

If you are told "No" to your request for a payment settlement, then you do not need to worry too much - yet. Many times, when people contest this decision, the insurance company will pay - in the majority of cases. Of course, if you really believe that the insurance company is in the wrong, and that you do have a real reason for them to pay it (you didn't break some clearly marked company policy), then you should proceed further.

Get Your Group Administrator To Help

If you are in a group plan, then you may also try to get the group administrator to help you. They may know other people that may also be able to help push your needs through. Another person to go see might be your doctor. If he feels that it is a legitimate claim, then his input may bring a resolution.

Other Sources of Help

If all of the above fails, then there are still other places that you can go to for help. There is your state's Department of Insurance where you can file a complaint; or, you can always get a lawyer – who are often looking for this type of claim.
