Limits On Health Coverage and Exclusions
When you apply for a health insurance policy, you may find that it comes back to you with certain limits or exclusions. These are specified things that the insurance company feels is too high of a risk for the present time and wants to wait a little while to see if anything develops before it will cover that possible medical need. Here are a few more details about various limits and exclusions and what it means to you.
Previous Conditions Must now Be Accepted - But Not Immediately
It used to be that if you had any health problems previous to being issued a new health insurance policy, that it was not covered - at all. Another option was that you could not even get health insurance. Now, however, as of 1997, the government created the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which gives you a much smoother transition into the new plan. Now, you can be given up to a 12 month waiting period for any preexisting medical condition that was either diagnosed or treated in the prior six months.
Earlier Coverage Counts Toward Exclusion Period
If you have been treated in the previous six months before changing insurance companies, then the time period for which you are covered can be subtracted from the exclusion time. The one thing that is most important here is that you must have maintained your health insurance coverage and not have allowed it to lapse for more than 62 days.
Exclusions May Not Be Given Under Some Conditions
If you have had a preexisting condition that was not treated, and not recommended for treatment in the six months previous to your application, then they cannot give you an exclusion for it. But it is for this same reason that they may choose not to insure you at all. This would obligate them to cover all issues that are connected with any prior conditions.
Limitations Of Coverage
Oftentimes a health insurance company will place certain limitations within the policy that immediately apply. This may include something as simple as not paying for something that is covered by another insurance company; or it may refer to certain medical procedures or supplies. This can include anything like eyeglasses, experimental procedures, elective surgery, or to things like not covering people who are injured in a war, or while committing a felony. The list can be rather extensive and will cover many things.
Limitations of coverage will vary between companies, but it is a good idea to find out what is in your policy. If you participate in certain sports or other potentially dangerous activities, then you may find that you were not covered - but wish that you were - or your family may wish that you were.
