Buying Pregnancy / Maternity Health Insurance

When you are getting ready to have an addition to the family, then you want to be sure that you have adequate coverage. Many things are needed during this time, and the expenses could be very high if you don't have proper coverage. Here are some things to look for when you get maternity insurance, or look to find out what your employer’s plan covers.

Buy Beforehand

The best way to prepare for the wonderful experience of increasing your family is to plan for it by getting your private health insurance policy first. Of course, things don't always work out that way, but it still is the preferable way, since some insurance companies will not cover the pregnancy the other way around. If you are low income, and should find out after the fact, then Medicaid will pick up the policy.

Questions To Ask About Your Policy

Before you assume anything, it is a good idea to see what the health insurance policy with maternity coverage offers. The first thing you want to know is does your employer’s policy cover maternity cases. By law, if there is 15 or more employees, it has to be covered. Then, find out if it is necessary for your primary care physician to have to give a referral for an obstetrician? Then, look to see what kind of prenatal services are available and how soon you can get the first checkup. Does it cover ultrasound scans?

Questions About The Hospital

Concerning the hospital, you will need to know if the closest hospital accepts your insurance plan, and find out if your doctor needs to be notified as soon as she goes into the hospital. Some policies will not cover it if the doctor does not know immediately! Another important thing to know is how much, if any, is the annual reimbursement limit? Going over this amount will be at your expense.

Making plans for the birth of the child needs to be looked at as well. For instance, if you are thinking about a nurse midwife, you need to see if this is covered - most health insurance maternity plans will not cover births at home. Also, see what is needed in case there is emergency care needed in the birthing room and a specialist has to be brought in - will it be covered - under what conditions? Will you have to notify your doctor first? Find out, too, about the length of the hospital stay - for normal birth and for C-section (if necessary).

Questions About Post Natal Care

The baby may need special care in the hospital after being born, such as an incubator, surgery, neonatal intensive care unit, or other things. What will your insurance company cover, and under what terms? See what has to be done, too, to add your new baby to your insurance policy. And then, don't forget to see if you need a referral to get special care for your baby by a pediatrician. What about preventive medicine for your baby - is vaccines included, well baby care, physicals, etc.?
