How To Choose A Health Insurance Plan

There are so many different kinds of health insurance that it is hard to know which one to choose. The truth is that there are a lot of choices and one type will probably suit your needs more than another. While many features are similar, here are some things that you will especially want to look for.

Cost

Although this may seem like an obvious point, the amount of money that you can afford each month may largely determine the type of private health insurance coverage you can get. So, to simplify things, you want to start by calculating your budget.

Type Of Plan

If you already have some insurance through your place of employment, then you may not need another full coverage plan - you may only need to supplement your existing coverage. The three types of insurance coverage are your Basic Care, the Major Medical, and the Comprehensive program, which is a combination of the other two.

Deductible

Find out just how your expenses are to be billed and what percentage is your deductible portion for doctor's visits, hospital care, and medicine. If you are rather healthy, you could probably save some money if you get a higher deductible, which will also mean lower premiums. A common plan is 80-20 deductible, which means the insurer pays 80% of the bill, and you pay 20% - up to the maximum deductible amount.

Availability of Care

Both the HMO's and the PPO's will give you a limited number of medical care providers, and you will need to choose one to be your primary care physician. So, if you do not have a lot of HMO doctors in your area, then this may not be a good choice. Whereas, a fee for service provider will allow you to go to any doctor you want - even if it is out of your State.

Preventive Medicine

If you have young children, or are expecting, and possibly hoping to have some more, then you may want to consider the preventive medicine practices of the HMO's. This form of family health insurance gives you coverage for a number of doctor visits just to ensure that you are well. Things like regular doctor's visits, well baby care, physicals, mammograms, and much more are part of the plan. You will pay a small fee with each visit, but otherwise, they are very good. They even take care of all of the paperwork for you.

Maximum Amounts

This is usually determined by how much you are willing to pay each month, but you still need to know how much is the maximum payout the insurance company provides for each medical need. This amount is preset, according to the plan. In addition, there is also a maximum deductible amount that you will pay per person.

Guaranteed Renewable

This is one thing that you need to be sure is in the policy. Some insurance companies are dropping the policies of those that are sick frequently, or get very sick – it is legal in some states. While the exact wording may not be there, the idea should be.
