Key Questions You Should Ask Before Choosing A Health Plan

Whenever you get ready to get a medical health plan for you and your family, you need to be able to make an informed choice. By asking key questions and getting good answers to them you can arrive at some right decisions. Here are some of the questions you need to ask about any health plan you are thinking about purchasing.

What Kind Of Protection Is Needed?

The first thing that you need to think about is what kind of coverage is needed. Do you just need basic coverage, major medical, or comprehensive (full coverage)? Is any coverage available to you through your own employment, or your wife's? If so, it is probably considerably cheaper, and you may only need to supplement it. Also decide if there are some special medical needs that have to be provided for. This could greatly influence your choice of health insurance providers.

How Easy Is It To Get Medical Attention?

After you have chosen a couple of plans, or found one that you are interested in, you will want to find out if there is a lot of doctors for that plan in your area. Also determine if the closest hospital accepts their card. The best type of policy for you will provide ease of access to medical coverage by having a number doctors and specialists that are nearby.

Some plans, such as HMO's and POS's, require that all medical services be directed through a primary care physician. Without their prior approval, the insurance company will not pay for it. If you have various needs where you need to see various specialists, then this type of plan is not for you. Other types of insurance, the fee for service and the PPO's will give you much greater freedom to choose who you see, but will also cost more. If you consider a PPO, then you need to find out how much will be paid toward the medical services when you do go outside of the network.

What Services Are Provided For?

This could be based on your answer to the first question. But you need to ask what kinds of services are provided, and what kinds are not provided. Ask things like what kind of hospital stays are permitted, and for how long; does it pay for home health care and under what terms; is there any preventive care like physicals, mammograms, well baby care, etc.; vision, dental; and prescriptions.

What Kind Of Reputation Does The Company Have?

This kind of question needs to be asked both about the health insurance company and the doctor - if you do not know them. You can ask your own doctor about the quality of service the insurer provides, and you can look on the Internet at your states medical board website to find out about a doctor.

What Are The Costs?

Besides looking at your monthly premium, you need to find out how much the deductible amounts and the copay is with each doctor's visit. This really could add up if there are a number of visits each month. Also see what the maximum cap is on the deductible for each year.

How Do Other Policies Compare?

Look at a few similar types of policies and compare them. Don't look at the prices only, but also look at what is provided and what is left out. Then consider for how long each service will be provided.
