Health Insurance For Students
When it comes time to go to college, you may find that it is also a time to look at getting a good health insurance policy. While many students are simply counting on the clinic at the college to provide their basic medical needs - it cannot supply anything more than just the very basics. Having a quality level of insurance coverage is necessary, and in many cases, required. Here are some things you need to know about student health insurance.
Many Colleges Require It
In these days of high medical costs, it is more than just a good idea to get good coverage. It would only take one rather serious health problem to take you out of college - and not be able to financially get back in. Also there is a greater risk of exposure to some diseases, due to the closeness in a dorm and classroom; or, if your go overseas, there are other diseases that you may be exposed to.
Look At Policies Provided Through Your College First
Many colleges make available a health insurance plan that is used by that particular university. Because they insure a large group of people, the college's health insurance plan is a group plan, it will also be cheaper than an individual health insurance policy.
Compare Policy Provisions Before You Buy
If you have a need for a specific provision through the insurance program, then you might find that the college plan might not cover it. It would be a real good idea to carefully look at what it provides for and what it will not cover. Also find out for how long are you covered. Health insurance policies are available in every state and there is quite a variation in prices, and some variation in the coverage. Finding the best deal and still being able to get a low cost health insurance with the most suitable coverage for your needs will take some research.
International student insurance
If you are traveling overseas for some education, then you need to have international student insurance. Whether you are an American student going abroad for study, or a foreign student traveling to the United States, medical insurance will probably be required. If you are traveling to the United States (and most other countries) you will be required to have a certain amount of coverage. Also, be sure that the insurer is recognized worldwide, and especially in the country you are traveling to. You also want to look and see if medical evacuation is covered, and what kind of a copay and deductible will apply while in that country.
