Kaiser Permanente

Kaiser Permanente is one of the largest nonprofit health plan in the United States. Kaiser Permanente evolved from industrial health care programs for construction, shipyard, and steel-mill workers for the Kaiser industrial companies during the late 1930s and 1940s. It was opened to public enrollment in October 1945. Founded in 1945, it is a nonprofit, group-practice health plan with headquarters in Oakland, California. Kaiser Permanente serves the health care needs of members in 9 states and the District of Columbia.

Kaiser Permanente is an integrated health delivery system, providing and coordinating the entire scope of care for our members, including:

  • preventive care
  • well-baby and prenatal care
  • immunizations
  • emergency care
  • screening diagnostics
  • hospital and medical services
  • pharmacy services

Today, it encompasses Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, Inc., Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, and the Permanente Medical Groups, as well as its affiliation with Group Health Cooperative based in Seattle, Washington.


 

 

National membership

There are 8.4 million voluntarily enrolled members as of December 2005. Most members join through their employers, who pay part or all of the monthly dues. Qualified individuals who do not have access to the plan through their employers also may join.

Regional structure

Kaiser Permanente's California Division and six other regions are composed of separate but closely cooperating organizations. These organizations are:

Kaiser Foundation Health Plans: Nonprofit, public-benefit corporations that contract with individuals and groups to arrange comprehensive medical and hospital services. Kaiser Foundation Health Plans contract with Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and medical groups to provide services.

Kaiser Foundation Hospitals: A nonprofit, public-benefit corporation that owns and operates community hospitals in California, Oregon, and Hawaii; owns outpatient facilities in several states; provides or arranges hospital services; and sponsors charitable, educational, and research activities.

Permanente Medical Groups: Partnerships or professional corporations of physicians. Each region has its own Permanente Medical Group. The Permanente Medical Groups assume full responsibility for providing and arranging necessary medical care in each region.
