HMO: Checklist For Coverage
When you take on a new health insurance policy, or receive a new HMO policy from your place of employment, it is a good idea to read it over and be sure of what you really have. Or, if you have never looked at your policy then this applies to you, too. Here is a checklist to help you identify the most important features of your policy.
Deductibles
To start off with you should know how much you are expected to pay with each doctor's visit and for your prescriptions – the copay. Then there is also a deductible which is a stated amount to be paid before the health insurance company pays anything. Usually (but not always) there will be a maximum amount (called a cap) as to how much you will pay in deductible fees each year.
Emergency Services
One thing that you obviously need medical coverage for is those unexpected emergencies. You need to know whether or not you are expected to call your doctor first, except in extreme cases. This is usually the case, but there may be starting a trend away from it. If you do not follow the right procedure –they may not pay for it.
Hospital Stays
You will also want to know if your doctor is affiliated with a particular hospital in the area, and whether or not that hospital accepts your HMO's plan. It would help you to be covered if they do. If you have to be admitted into the hospital, then you should know what services are covered, how long of a stay you are covered for and what other services you can expect - such as home health care. If there are procedures that need to be done, how do you go about getting the OK for them?
Home Care
If, after a hospital stay you should need home health care, then you need to know what providers are available and for how long are you covered for these services. If a nurse is required, then how many hours can the nurse be there each day, and for how many days? What percentage of the bill does the HMO cover?
Major Medical
In the case of an illness, or accident, you should know what is the ceiling amount that the HMO will pay for any single incident. Sometimes this figure is also limited to a total over the period of a lifetime, too. Find out if there are some diseases that are not covered in the policy. This may mean you will want to supplement the policy with additional coverage.
Extras
Depending on your policy, you may have some extra things that the plan will provide for. You should look to see if there is coverage for things like eyeglasses or contacts, dental, occupational therapy, mental health, support equipment like ventilators, or anything else in the way of equipment or services. Also, if you are young, and you are planning on bringing some little ones into the world, then you will want to make sure you have maternity insurance - for which you will pay a little extra. It is better to be sure your health insurance program covers you than to find out about all these things - when it is too late.
