HMO: Know What Your HMO Plan Covers
Having a good health insurance policy is one thing, but knowing how to use it to the best advantage is another. In fact, if you are not aware of some of the finer details of the policy, it could end up costing you a lot of money - more than what you may expect. When it comes right down to it, many people end up finding out that they do not have what they thought they had. Here are some things that you need to find out about your policy to help you save some money.
Special Needs
If you have special needs that require regular attention, it is a good idea to select a doctor that has specialized training in that area of medicine. An HMO requires that you work within the system (this is how it can keep the costs down) and you will need a referral to see another doctor. It can also take more than a month to change your primary care physician - if need be.
Procedure For Emergency Care
HMO's require that you contact your doctor before you proceed to the emergency room - at least if the situation allows time for a call. In extreme emergencies this may be overlooked, but in calmer circumstances they expect and require it. They claim that the doctor, or someone in the office, can be reached 24 hours a day. This means that they really expect a call. If you seek emergency care, and time is not really critical - you could be paying for it, otherwise, or at least part of it.
Prescriptions Covered
Be aware of what your policy says about covering prescriptions - especially if you are also on Medicare. The HMO manual will tell you what prescriptions are covered in your policy, and sometimes you may need to get a generic brand. You should find out what is covered before you may need some of those very expensive medicines – and then find out that you have to pay for them.
Preventive Care
One of the special functions of an HMO is to provide you with preventive medicine, or health maintenance. This means that they offer you physicals, regularly scheduled doctor's visits, natal care, well baby care, mammograms, and more. Some HMO's today will place more of an emphasis on this than others. There is a slacking off in preventive care in some HMO's - possibly to save more on their costs. But if you are reaching those ages where medical problems may afflict you, then you need to talk to your doctor about getting those necessary checkups and stay on top of any possible trouble.
Work Through The System
Because the system may be more than hard to get a referral that you feel is needed, you should know how to make an appeal within the system. This gives you access to medical minds that operate higher than your local doctor, and it may get you the desired referral, Otherwise, if you still do not have the cooperation you want, there are higher channels - governmental, that you may appeal to. But you should be aware of the process ahead of time - if the need should ever arise.
