Fee-for-Service (Indemnity Plan)
When it comes time to get a good health insurance policy, then this may be just the program you need. It will provide you with the greatest amount of flexibility in your health care, making it the choicest of programs. Here is why you may want to get Fee-For-Service health insurance coverage.
It Is Convenient
This affordable health insurance plan allows you to go anywhere you want to go. Since it does not matter whether or not your health care provider belongs to the system or not, you are simply sent the bill, and then you send it on to the insurance company. This means that you are the middleman and you deal with both parties directly.
The one drawback here is that the system only allows for payment up to the amount of any specified service to be equal to that which is found in your own geographic location, or a predetermined amount. So, although you may live in Podunk holler, and your rates are low there, you have the privilege of traveling to New York City, or Anchorage - but you will pay the difference in the price.
It Allows You To Choose Your Doctors
Another great feature is that you do not need to be referred to another doctor or specialist before you can see them. You can go where you want, but again, you may want to see what your fee-for-service health insurance company is willing to pay first, and then call for an estimate from the doctor before you go. Another thing is that you do not have to choose a primary care physician, and you can change doctors at any time.
It Has Deductible Amounts
Fee-for-service plans usually carry a deductible amount that must be paid before any insurance amounts are paid. This is usually around $250 per person, and will include a maximum amount. In addition, they usually will only carry about 80% of the bill, which means it is coinsurance. The maximum amount that you will pay for your portion of all bills in a given year will be stated in the premium - and you need to know this amount in advance. It could be as low as $1,000, or all the way up to $5,000.
It Has Some Exceptions
As with any policy, not everything is covered. Not everything that is medical related counts toward the deductible - only certain things apply.
A fee-for-service health insurance policy may be obtained for basic coverage, for major medical expenses, or for a combination of both. You want to be sure of what type of policy you have when you buy it. If there are any questions about your policy, don't buy it until they are satisfactorily answered for you.
