Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)
If you are looking for health insurance, then you will want to look at some of the benefits of this plan. A preferred provider organization has some advantages over other health plans in that it gives you some freedom in seeing a doctor of your choice. Here are some details of this type of insurance.
Similar To An HMO
This form of health insurance was designed to be an improvement over the HMO's in that it gives you an increased freedom to see doctors outside of the system. Nor are you as restricted, as in an HMO, in that you always need the approval of your primary care physician. You do still have to choose your main doctor, but you can also see other doctors at your own discretion.
Prior to agreeing to the plan, you need to find out if there are a number of PPO providers in your area - with the health insurance company that your are considering. If there are not very many, this will either force you to drive a long way to get to them, or you will regularly be paying higher than necessary for your doctor visits.
Similar To A Fee For Service
The PPO was intended to give you the features of both an HMO and an FFS. It largely succeeded because you can go to doctors outside of the system - when you want. The one thing that you should know, however, is that when you do, the cost of these out of the system doctors will be a little higher than for a doctor in the system. The reason for this is because the doctors who join the system agree to offer lower rates than in the FFS plans. So, the bottom line is, which many people like, is that you can stick with your current doctor and still join a PPO, but you will have to pay a little more.
Annual Deductible
These plans often have an annual deductible. You need to be especially aware of this because it could be anywhere from around $250 to as much as $5,000 per year. The PPO does not start paying anything until after you pay this amount. If you do not pay more than the deductible in any year, the amount you did pay is not carried over into the next year – you simply start over.
In addition, there is a copayment that you will make with each visit, and there may be a coinsurance, too, with you paying a percentage of each medical situation. Also be sure to find out if your prescriptions are covered in the plan – probably with a copayment being necessary.
Paperwork
When you join, you are given a membership card. As in an HMO, there is no paperwork when you visit doctors and hospitals that are within the system, because all transactions are done through your card. Outside the system, however, the paperwork is yours, and you do have to fill it out.
Preventive Care
Like an HMO, the preferred provider organization is interested in preventing and detecting problems early. Because of this, you can see the doctor more often with regularly scheduled appointments, physicals, well baby care, immunizations, mammograms, and other things.
